BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington Men’s Tennis dropped a 4-1 road decision at California today, falling to 6-7 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. Freshman Ivan Sodan got his first career Pac-12 singles victory for the Dawgs.
The Bears took the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles, Overbeck/Sun beating Jim Hendrikx and Han-Chih Lin, followed by a 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot where 65th-ranked Chang/Wright topped 17th-ranked Dzianis Zharyn and Cesar Bouchelaghem.
The Dawgs and Bears split the first sets in singles, 3-3, with Sodan, Nedim Suko, and Zharyn taking their openers.
Bouchelaghem dropped just his second dual match of the season at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-2, to Carl Emil Overbeck. Sodan defeated Jonathan Irwanto at the No. 5 singles spot in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, which made it 2-1 Cal at the time.
Lin fell at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-3, to Timofey Stepanov, to make it 3-1 Bears. Cal clinched at No. 6, where Jim Hendrikx fell, 6-3, 7-5, to Lucas Magnaudet. Zharyn and Suko were very early in third sets when Cal clinched.
Washington will stay the course and stay in the Bay Area for another non-conference match in just two days, as it visits 62nd-ranked Santa Clara on Tuesday. UW wraps its week in California with a match at Pepperdine this Thursday.
