Montgomery, Ala. – The Huskers (4-5, 0-0 Big Ten) opened the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with a 4-1 loss to No. 14 Arizona on Friday afternoon at the Lagoon Park.
Due to a weather delay, the match started with singles play instead of doubles play to speed up the matches.
Arizona (7-2, 0-0 PAC 12) got on the board first on Court 2 with a No. 88 Colton Smith, 6-2, 6-1, win over Leo Linquet. The Wildcats jumped to a 2-0 lead on Court 6 as Jay Friend defeated Nic Wiedenhorn, 6-2, 6-2.
The Huskers got their lone point of the match on Court 4, after William Gleason picked up a ranked win over No. 117 Herman Hoeyeraal, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Arizona picked up the final two points needed to win the match with wins on Court 5 and Court 1. No. 110 Nick Lagaev defeated Calvin Mueller, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 45 Jonas Ziverts defeated Roni Hietaranta, 6-2, 6-4.
On Court 3, Shunya Maruyama and Gustaf Strom went unfinished with Maruyama down 7-5, 3-3.
Nebraska now plays #38 Alabama. The two teams completed the doubles portion of the match, with Nebraska picking up the point. Singles play will take place on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Nebraska leading 1-0.
Following the conclusion of that match, Nebraska will play against either Tulane or No. 44 Texas Tech.
