CARY, N.C. — The No. 1 North Carolina women’s tennis team (29-1) fell to No. 5 NC State (23-4) 4-1 in the ACC Championship match.
With the Semifinal win over Virginia played indoors due to inclement weather, the Heels and Pack squared off outdoors under gorgeous weather at the Cary Tennis Park.
North Carolina began the morning dropping the doubles point as NC State took two of three form the Tar Heels. This marks only the second time since ACC play began in late February that the Tar Heels dropped the point.
No. 8 pairing of Miller/Rajecki (NCST) defeated No. 11 Crawley/Tanguilig 6-1, while Abrams/Rencheli (NCST) took down Forbes/Tran 6-2.
The doubles match of No. 16 Brantmeier/Scotty (UNC) vs. No. 5 Shnaider/Smith (NCST) went unfinished (5-4), as NC State claimed the point.
Singles was a battle, with matches going back and forth seeing leads shift for both quads. State took the 2-0 lead, as No. 29 Amelia Rajecki (NCST) defeated No. 21 Carson Tanguilig (UNC) 6-3, 6-1. The wolfpack took the 3-0 lead as No. 12 Diana Shnaider (NCST) defeated No. 1 Fiona Crawley (UNC) 6-2, 6-1.
The Heels got on the board as No. 6 Reese Brantmeier (UNC) defeated No. 15 Alana Smith (NCST) 6-4, 6-2.
The Pack won the match on court 5 as Sophie Adams (NCST) defeated No. 95 Elizabeth Scotty (UNC) 7-5, 6-1.
No. 32 Abbey Forbes and No. 37 Anika Yarlagadda matches went unfinished.
