DURHAM – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championship opens action this weekend with four Duke women’s tennis standouts kicking off play in the pre-qualifying round. The championship will be contested Sept. 30 through Oct. 8 at the Cary Tennis Park.
Representing the Blue Devils in the pre-qualifying round will be graduate students Iuliia Bryzgalova and Brianna Shvets, junior Ellie Coleman and senior Karolina Berankova.
In singles, Coleman opens play versus Alina Murkhortova of Wisconsin at 10:30 a.m., Saturday followed by Shvets against Reece Carter of Arizona at 12:30 p.m. Bryzgalova goes up against Southern California’s Emma Charney at 1 p.m., and Berankova closes action at 2 p.m., with a match versus Anna Supapitch Kuearum of Iowa State.
Pre-qualifying will take place Sept. 30 through Oct. 1 and then qualifying Oct. 2-3. The main draw will run from Oct. 4-8.
Live streams of the action along with live scoring will be available via the ITA.
Over the long history of the ITA All-American Championship, Duke features three singles champions – Vanessa Webb (1996), Ansley Cargill (2000) and Kelly McCann (2002). The three winners rank tied for third overall. Two Blue Devil doubles teams won the title in 1994 (Monica Mraz and Wendy Lyons) and 2017 (Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy). The two winners in doubles rank tied for third as well.
