CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke’s Pedro Rodenas was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while his teammates Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang were tabbed the Doubles Team of the Week. Virginia’s Dylan Dietrich earned Freshman of the Week honors.
Rodenas posted a 2-0 weekend in singles action to lead No. 8 Duke to an undefeated weekend. The 2023 ACC Freshman of the Year kicked off the weekend with a straight set win over NC State’s Fons Van Sambeek, 6-2, 6-4, before recording a 6-2, 6-3, ranked victory over No. 47 Marcel Kamrowski of Middle Tennessee. That match clinched the victory for the Blue Devils and sent them to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the first time since 2018. The sophomore out of Madrid, Spain, then battled with teammate Garrett Johns to clinch the doubles point against the Blue Raiders on Sunday with a 6-4 win.
Heller and Zhang helped eighth-ranked Duke clinch the doubles point against No. 23 NC State on Saturday as the Blue Devils blanked the Wolfpack, 4-0. In the rematch of their doubles faceoff in the fall at the ITA Carolina Regional that saw NC State win, the Duke pair battled to a 6-4 win over No. 13 Martin Borisiouk and Joseph Wayand. Heller and Zhang finished first on Sunday against Middle Tennessee to give Duke the edge on its way to another 4-0 win.
Dietrich helped lead No. 3 Virginia to an undefeated weekend at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The freshman, a mainstay on Court 3, played up at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spot in both matches of the Cavaliers’ weekend. The Zurich, Switzerland, native gave UVA its first singles win with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win on Court 1 against Northern Arizona, before fighting through a second set 7-0 tiebreaker to earn a 7-4, 7-6 (7-0) win against FAU.
