Doubles Shine in No. 18 Men’s Tennis Loss to USD

Arizona State, Ohio State, Notre Dame

SAN DIEGO– No. 18 Arizona State men’s tennis (5-2) fought until the very end against the University of San Diego (2-2), but ultimately fell 4-3 in Sunday’s matinee. Despite the loss, the Sun Devils dominated at doubles, and earned the doubles point for the sixth time in seven matches this season.

Senior Max McKennon and freshman Bor Artnak continue to lead the way at doubles for the Sun Devils, and are undefeated in doubles this season after taking down #15 Sitan Klaassen and Sacchitt Sharrma this afternoon, improving the pair to 7-0 through seven matches this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Sun Devils secured the doubles point picking up two 6-3 wins on court one and three. Murphy Cassone and Nicola Cigna finished first at the third position while McKennon and Artnak clinched the doubles point at the first position to earn a 1-0 lead. 

McKennon picked up the first singles win of the afternoon, after defeating his opponent in straight sets, which gave the Sun Devils a 2-0 lead. Cigna and Ginat fell in straight sets and USD evened the score up at 2-2. 

Artnak put the Sun Devils ahead 3-2 after defeating #31 Iiro Vasa in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and earning his highest ranked win over an opponent this season. Cassone fell to #8 Tarvet in straight sets, and again the teams were tied 3-3. Bullard battled, but fell in straight sets and USD managed to run away with the 4-3 victory.
