FLUSHING, N.Y. – North Carolina senior Fiona Crawley advanced to the second round of the US Open qualifying tournament after she defeated Reka Luca Jani of Hungary, 6-1, 6-7(7-5), 7-6(10-6) in her first round matchup.
Crawley, the ITA National Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year, picked up her first Grand Slam match victory with the win. She also became the first athlete of the tournament who competed collegiately this past season to register a win in the qualifying round.
Crawley will have Wednesday off before facing Timea Tabos of Hungary in the second qualifying round.
Former Tar Heel Makenna Jones fell to Mirjam Bjorklund of Sweden, 1-6, 2-6 in her first round qualifying matchup.
