Cats Continue Win Streak with 4-2 Victory Over Utah


SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Arizona women’s tennis tallied its third consecutive win on Sunday, defeating Utah 4-2 in Salt Lake City.

The doubles point went to the Wildcats (16-10, 4-5 Pac-12) behind wins on courts two and three. Midori Castillo-Meza and Belen Nevenhoven recorded a 6-2 takedown of Sara Akid and Kaila Barksdale just minutes before Teja Tirunelveli and Kayla Wilkins secured a 6-4 win over Samantha Horwood and Kat Lyman.

No. 101 Reece Carter jumped out to an early lead on court one in singles, going up 5-0 on Lopez before taking the first set. Wilkins and Fulgenzi also won their first sets, and it was Fulgenzi who was the first to victory with a 6-1, 6-2 takedown of Akid on court five.

Carter closed out the straight-set win on court one, getting the 6-2, 7-5 victory over Lopez to put Arizona one away from clinching the win.

Utah (10-10, 2-7 Pac-12) got on the board with a win on court four as Kat Lyman defeated Castillo-Meza 6-2, 7-5 and put up a second team point when Barksdale got a 6-2, 7-5 win over Martyna Ostrzygalo.

Wilkins clinched the Arizona victory, defeating Yuhan Liu 6-2, 7-6(8) on court two to seal the Cats’ fifth win in their last six matches.

Arizona will play its final match of the regular season Saturday, April 20 at 12:00 p.m. MST at Arizona State.
