STARKVILLE – Head coach Chris Hooshyar and the Mississippi State women’s tennis program are thrilled to welcome Gianna Oboniye to its roster.

Oboniye joins the Bulldogs out of Edmonton, Canada and will arrive on campus to begin her career in the fall of 2024.

“I am really excited about Gianna joining the team,” Hooshyar said. “I have always said it, one of the biggest honors of being a college coach is when a kid calls you to say I want to come and play for you. It is a huge responsibility, and I don’t take it lightly. The Bulldog family is going to love what Gianna brings to the court. She is already performing at a high level. I can’t wait to get to the practice court with her and see how high her ceiling really is. I think it is pretty high.”

In 2023, Oboniye became the U18 Canadian Outdoor Nationals doubles champion. She was also the J60 Edmonton doubles champion and a singles finalist at that tournament.

Oboniye competed in the 2022 J100 Burlington and J30 Halifax where she became the doubles champion in both events. She was a doubles finalist for the J200 Montreal and J30 Victoria last year.

The 17-year-old participated in the U12 Canadian Indoor Nationals twice in young career. In 2019, Oboniye placed ninth in singles at nationals and the year prior she earned fifth place in singles and collected the sportsmanship award.

Oboniye also took part in the 2018 U12 Canadian Outdoor Nationals where she became the doubles champion, placed third in singles and earned another sportsmanship award.

She was a part of many team events, including Canadian Summer Games Alberta Team in 2022 and Canadian Western Summer Games Team in 2019. Oboniye played in the Canada versus U.S. New York and the Canada versus U.S. Montreal in 2019.

Oboniye was one of three U12 girls selected to represent Canada at 2018 Bolivia’s COPA COSAT where the team became champions in the finals.
