Bulldogs Earn Top Regional Billing

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State was rated the top men’s tennis program in the ITA Southern Regional this past season.

The Bulldogs finished ahead of SEC brethren Ole Miss (2), Auburn (3), LSU (4) and Alabama (6) in the ITA Southern Regional rankings. The Southern Regional consists of NCAA Division I schools from Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

In addition to the team rankings, MSU had five singles players and two doubles duos recognized in the ITA Southern Regional rankings as well. Five Bulldogs – Nemanja Malesevic (4), Ewen Lumsden (6), Carles Hernandez (7), Petar Jovanovic (9) and Benito Sanchez Martinez (15) – were ranked among the top 15 players in the region. No other school in the region had more than two players picked in the top 15.

Hernandez and Malesevic (4) as well as Malesevic and Michal Novansky (8) were ranked among the top 10 doubles tandems in the ITA Southern Regional and are all expected back next season.

Earlier this week, Matt Roberts was named the ITA Southern Regional Coach of the Year while Jake Jacoby brought home ITA Southern Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honors. Lumsden was tabbed as the ITA Southern Regional Senior Player of the Year while Gregor Ramskogler was selected as the Most Improved Senior in the ITA Southern Regional.

State finished 16th in the overall ITA team rankings following a 21-8 showing this past season. The Bulldogs earned nine victories against ranked opponents – including four vs. top 20 teams – and posted a 17-1 record at home.
