Bruins Stopped in NCAA Singles, Doubles Tournaments

URBANA, Ill. – The tournament portion of the 2021-22 UCLA women’s tennis season ended Tuesday, as Elysia Bolton and the pair of Bolton and Elise Wagle suffered losses in the NCAA singles and doubles tournaments at Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.

Making her second-career appearance in the singles second round, Bolton was eliminated by Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado of VCU in one of the day’s first matches. Then, in the afternoon, Bolton and Wagle fell victim to the doubles field’s No. 1-seed, Jaeda Daniel/Nell Miller of NC State.

Bolton and Diaz-Delgado traded breaks of serve out of the gate before each settled in. The next break came at 4-4, when Diaz-Delgado gained the upper hand. She would collect the next game, as well, for the set. The second saw Diaz-Delgado start with a break and add another at 1-3. Bolton picked up two more games, but they were too little, too late, as she fell by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Diaz-Delgado, who beat Pepperdine’s Shiori Fukuda in the first round, earned a third-round date with Natasha Subhash of Virginia.

Daniel and Miller took four of the first five games from Bolton and Wagle and ultimately claimed the opening set by a 6-2 score. The second set remained on serve until a tiebreaker was needed. Daniel and Miller, ranked No. 1 by the ITA going into the tournament, dropped the first two points before taking the next six. The Bruins chipped away with two more, but would come out short in the end.
