Bears Reach Doubles Semis As Fall Invite Opens

Valentina Ivanov won twice in doubles and once in singles on the first day of the Cal Fall Invitational.

BERKELEY – Cal women’s tennis stars Valentina Ivanov and Jessica Alsola advanced to the top-flight doubles semifinals on the first day of the Cal Fall Invitational on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts. Ivanov and teammate Hannah Viller Moeller also moved on to the top-flight round of 16 in singles.
 
Ivanov, a senior, and Alsola, a sophomore, won twice Friday, beating San Jose State’s Carolina Millan and Lara Marcos Mas, 8-3, and Iowa State’s Sofia Cabezas and Anna Supapitch Kuearum, 8-5, to reach the semis, which the Bears will play at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
 
Hoping to meet them in the semis were Viller Moeller, a junior, and Cal senior Erin Richardson, who defeated Santa Clara’s Dasee Carter and Jenna Gordon, 8-3, in the round of 16. But the Cal duo lost to Gonzaga’s Catherine Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska, 8-6, in the quarterfinals.
 
Another Cal pair reached Saturday semifinals, as junior Cami Brown and sophomore Makenna Thiel won twice, including an 8-6 result over Arizona State’s Natasha Hill and Marianna Argyrokastriti in the quarters. The two Bears will also play their semi at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
 
In top-flight, or Blue, singles, Viller Moeller made quick work of Olive Maunupau of UC Davis, winning 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round of 32. In the Bears’ last match of the day at Hellman, Ivanov rallied after dropping the first set to beat San Francisco’s Simran Chhraba, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16.
 
The Cal Fall Invitational continues Saturday.
