The California women’s tennis team opens the New Year in the annual Weinman Foundation Invitational, with the Golden Bears competing with players from host Hawaii, BYU, Florida State and N.C. State in singles and doubles from Thursday through Sunday at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu. Play begins at 9 a.m. HST each day.
 
This marks the third straight year that Cal will start the second half of its season in the Hawaii tournament before returning to Berkeley to host the Cal Winter Invitational.

Cal Tabbed 19th In Preseason Poll

Cal is ranked 19th in the ITA team preseason poll, which came out Wednesday. The Bears were ranked 12th in last season’s preseason poll.

 

In the most recent ITA individual rankings (released Nov. 15), three Bears were ranked in singles – No. 12 Hannah Viller Moeller, No. 17 Jessica Alsola and No. 36 Katja Wiersholm. In doubles, the pair of Viller Moeller and Mao Mushika was ranked 14th.

Last Year In Honolulu

The Bears completed play in the Weinman Foundation Invitational on Jan. 7, 2023, with Jessica Alsola, Berta Passola Folch and Makenna Thiel winning in singles at the UH Tennis Complex. Alsola, ranked 16th in singles, defeated Iowa State’s 114th-ranked Sofia Cabezas, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Thiel beat Iowa State’s Christin Hsieh, 6-2, 6-4, while Passola Folch beat Hawaii’s Klara Novakova, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1. The three Bears each finished 2-1 in singles in Hawaii.

 

Bears End 2023 In San Diego, Tempe

A successful first half of the 2023-24 season came to a close Nov. 5 as the last Bear standing at the ITA National Fall Championships – Jessica Alsola – competed in the consolation final in San Diego and as another Cal group concluded play in the Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Arizona.

 

Alsola won the first set against Stanford’s Connie Ma. But the then-47th-ranked Bear ultimately fell to the 26th-ranked Cardinal player, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the title match at the Barnes Tennis Center. Cal’s Hannah Viller Moeller also competed in singles at fall nationals, with the…
