The win marked Baris’ fifth win over a ranked opponent this spring and 12th overall this year. Baris advances to Tuesday’s second round and will face Stanford freshman Nishesh Basavareddy, who topped NC State’s Rafa Izquierdo Luque in straight sets Monday.
Tuesday’s match will be a reunion for Baris and Basavareddy, who teamed up to win the US Open Junior double title last September. The pair also faced each other during the fall season in the consolation seminfinals of the ITA All-American Championships, with Basavareddy defeating Baris, 6-1, 6-4.
Baris will also be in action alongside Spartan sophomore Max Sheldon in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship Tuesday. The nationally-ranked duo will play top-seeded Toby Samuel and Connor Thomson of South Carolina.
Live scoring for Tuesday’s matches will be available on MSUSpartans.com. Streaming will be available via the Cracked Racquets YouTube channel.
