SALT LAKE CITY – #14 Arizona fell 3-4 in a tight match to #27 Utah at Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City on Friday, April 14.
The Wildcats dropped the doubles point to the Utes and came up short one singles match to lose their second Pac-12 match of the season. Jay Friend put Arizona on the board with a straight set win at five singles, defeating Berk Bugarikj 6-3, 7-6(3). Next was Gustaf Strom at two singles with a ranked win over #82 Francisco Bastias. The Swede defeated the Ute 6-4 in straight sets and leads the Wildcats in singles wins with a 17-2 dual record. Senior Jonas Ziverts secured the final singles victory of the day against #61 Geronimo Busleiman. The captain bested the Ute 7-5 in straight sets to receive his fourth ranked win of the season.
All eyes were on court one after Dominique Rolland and Nick Lagev lost their matches at four and six singles. Colton Smith battled #94 Franco Capalbo to three intense sets. The sophomore Wildcat fell 3-6 in the first, came back 6-2 in the second before ultimately falling 7-6(3) in a heartbreaking tiebreaker.
Men’s Tennis is now 19-5 overall and second in Pac-12 standings. They return to Arizona for their last regular season match against ASU on April 22 at 6 p.m. MT in Tempe.
