Spartans Knock Off Purdue on the Road, 5-2


WEST LAFEYETTE, Ind. – Michigan State men’s tennis earned its second road and conference win of the season Friday afternoon, securing a 5-2 win over Purdue in West Lafayette at the Schwartz Tennis Center. 

MSU moved to 9-11 (2-4 B1G) with the win, while Purdue dropped to 2-16 (0-6 B1G). 

MSU earned the first point of the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Playing in their third-straight match together, freshman Ozan Baris and fifth-year senior Anthony Pero picked up a 7-5 win over the Boilermakers’ Tomasz Dudek and Daniel Labrador on court one. Sophomore Max Sheldon and junior Graydon Lair also earned a 7-5 win on court three over Julen Morgan and Mujtaba Ali-Khan to secure the doubles point for the Spartans. 

The Spartans dominated singles on courts five and six, quickly picking up a pair of points to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman David Saye won his second-straight match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Purdue’s Tomasz Dudek. Saye’s win also marked his fourth victory in five matches.  

Sophomore Josh Portnoy was the second Spartan off the courts, picking up a 6-1, 6-2 win on court six over Purdue’s Hassan Baroudi.  

Baris clinched the match for the Spartans one court one, defeating Labrador 6-3, 7-5. Trailing early in the second set, Baris battled back late to secure the clinching point for MSU. 

After the clinching match, the remaining matches on courts two, three and four were played out. Sheldon dropped his match at No. 2, while Lair fell in a three-set match at No. 4.  

Pero picked up the final point for the Spartans on court three. After taking the first set 7-6(3), Pero dropped the second 4-6 before securing the win in a super tiebreak set, 11-9.  

The Spartans play their final regular-season road match on Sunday, April 16 at Indiana. First serve is set for noon.
