Arizona Claims No.7 Spot for First Time in Program History


TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona Men’s Tennis team has claimed the No.7 spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings. Last week the Wildcats set a program record for the highest team ranking in their history breaking top 10 at the No.9 spot on the board. This week they have surpassed it once again setting their new all-time high ranking. The Cats also made three appearances in the singles rankings and two in doubles.
 
Arizona holds a 12-2 record as they continue throughout their spring season, five of these wins being ranked wins. As well as being the highest ranked in the Pac-12 conference.
 

This past week Arizona was crowned the Diablo College Tennis Invitational Champions, taking down No.36 Michigan and No.15 Michigan State. In the month of February, the Wildcats traveled to New York making their first ever appearance in the ITA National Indoor Championship. They brought home two ranked wins against No.3 Texas and No.10 Texas A&M. Only some of the many first for Arizona in the 2023-2024 season as they hosted the ITA Kickoff and took down No.24 Baylor ending their 13-year streak heading to the indoor championship.
 
Arizona made five other features in the rankings. Colton Smith led the way at No.8 with a 23-6 record. He represents the Cats in the No.1 singles spot. Smith holds four ranked wins throughout his singles play.
 
Smith was the third Pac-12 Player of the Week following teammate Jay Friend kicking off the season as the first POW.
 
Jay Friend checked in at No.52 with a 19-7 record switching off between No.1 and 2 in singles for Arizona. Friend holds one ranked win as of now.
 
The third singles player to represent Arizona is No.89 Gustaf Strom. This senior holds a 17-9 record with two ranked wins.
 
Smith and Friend secured the No.15 spot in doubles with a 16-5 record. Smith appears once more with pair, Herman Hoeyeraal, at No.50.
