Blue Devils Fall on the Road at No. 32 Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 21st-ranked Duke women’s tennis team traveled to 32nd-ranked Notre Dame on Friday and dropped a 4-2 decision to the Irish at the Courtney Tennis Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
 
The Blue Devils fall to 13-8 overall and 6-6 in the ACC, while the Irish improve to 16-7, 7-5. 
 
How It Happened

• The Blue Devils came out and got a win in doubles on court two very quickly.Playing together for the first time this season, Emma Jackson and Shavit Kimchi posted a 6-1 victory over Carrie Beckman and Akari Matsuno.
• The Irish collected wins on court one and three to clinch the doubles point.
• On court one, Duke’s duo of Karolina Berankova and Katie Codd led 5-3 and had match point leading 5-4, but the Irish’s 44th-ranked Page Freeman and Julia Andreach came back to win and take a 6-5 advantage.Berankova and Codd won a key deuce point to even the score, 6-6, but Notre Dame won the tiebreaker, 7-5.
• The Blue Devil tandem of Brianna Shvets and Iuliia Bryzgalova trailed 4-1 early, but roared back to even the score, 4-4.Yashna Yellayi and Nibi Ghosh responded by winning two games to get the victory, 6-4.
• Duke evened the score in singles, 1-1, as Berankova posted her third straight victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Matsuno on court six.After trailing 3-2 in the first set, Berankova battled back to win the first set, 6-3.She also trailed, 2-0, in the second, but made another comeback.
• Notre Dame regained the lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win by Yellayi on court five over Shvets.
• The Irish put their third point on the board as Bojana Pozder posted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) win over 81st-ranked Bryzgalova.In the first set, Bryzgalova led, 3-2, but went on to drop the set.After trailing 5-2 in the second set, Bryzgalova battled back to even the match, 6-6, but fell in the tiebreaker.
• The Blue Devils then cut into the Notre Dame lead as Duke’s 58th-ranked Kimchi posted a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win on court two against Freeman.Both players went back and forth in the first set until the match was tied, 4-4.Kimchi then won two games to take the first, 6-4.In the second set, Kimchi led 2-1, but then fell behind, 5-4, before winning two consecutive games to go ahead, 6-5.Freeman evened the score, 6-6, but Kimchi was able to take the tiebreaker, 8-6.
