EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon men’s tennis head coach Nils Schyllander reached his 300th career win as a head coach at Oregon when the Ducks defeated No. 17 ranked Stanford on April 23rd.
The win was his 242nd as the head coach of the men’s team, after winning 58 matches as Oregon’s women’s tennis head coach.
Coach Schyllander spent four years as an assistant with the Oregon women’s team before taking over as head coach in 2002. Schyllander won 58 matches in the four-year span, including 60 percent of matches three seasons in a row. He then took over as the men’s head coach in 2006. In 2009-10, he led the Ducks to their first winning season in seven years, a sign of things to come for Oregon.
“Congratulations to Nils on this tremendous milestone,” said Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens. “Nils has provided strong leadership to both our women’s and men’s programs during his historic 20-plus year run here at Oregon, developing outstanding tennis players and positively impacting countless young people’s lives along the way. Nils has built a winning culture that has produced 12 consecutive winning seasons, and we’re excited for what the future holds for the Ducks men’s tennis program.”
The Pac-12 expanded to twelve teams prior to the 2011-12 season and the Ducks have had a winning record every season since. In 2013-14, Schyllander led the Ducks to 17 wins and earned Wilson/ITA Northwest Regin Coach of the Year. Two seasons later, his Oregon team won 19 games and Schyllander was honored as Pac-12 Coach of the Year.
With Schyllander at the helm, the Ducks have reached the NCAA Tournament five times, reaching the second round four times. Thomas Laurent earned All-American honors under Schyllander’s tutelage in 2019, making three-straight trips to the NCAA Individual Tournament. Last season, Oregon’s doubles pair of Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele became the first Ducks duo to reach the NCAA Doubles Tournament in over 20 years.
“To reach 300 wins is great,” said Schyllander. “Credit goes to all of the amazing student-athletes I’ve had the privilege to recruit and coach at the finest institution in the country, the University of Oregon.”
