COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The eighth-ranked Tennessee men’s tennis team fell to No. 12 Texas A&M, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Vols (15-4, 4-1 SEC) lost the doubles point as the Aggies (15-4, 4-1 SEC) notched wins on courts one and three. The 20th-ranked duo of Shunsuke Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka posted a 6-2 victory on court two over Texas A&M’s Luke Casper and JC Roddick.
In singles action, the Aggies gained their second point with a win on court two. Chris Li put the Vols on the board with a 7-6(2), 6-2 win over No. 118 Togan Tokac, recording his first victory over a ranked opponent this season. Texas A&M tallied another win on court four, but sixth-ranked Johannus Monday battled to win his first set tiebreaker over No. 36 Raphael Perot, 7-6(10), and cruised to victory in a 6-2 effort in his second set. Texas A&M clinched the match with a win on court five, followed by another on court six.
MONDAY VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
With his straight-set victory over the Aggies’ No. 36 Raphael Perot, Johannus Monday has defeated 11 ranked opponents in 2023-24, with seven residing in the top 50. The senior boasts a 15-2 record atop the lineup this season and is four wins away from eclipsing 100 career singles victories.
CHRIS LI FINDING A GROOVE
Li is currently on a four-match winning streak in SEC play and holds a 5-1 record at the No. 3 spot for Tennessee. His win over A&M’s Tokac marked his 10th dual match win this season.
