EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women’s tennis team wrapped up their second home tournament of the season, the Spartan Invite, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday.
Action kicked off at 9 a.m. with freshmen Ellie Blackford, Amara Brahmbhatt and Olivia Kutlova competing in singles matches. Blackford and Kutlova were against Northwestern opponents, while Brahmbhatt faced an Ohio State foe. This was Kutlova’s second appearance in singles as a Spartan, with her debut happening one day earlier on Saturday.
Brahmbhatt dominated in her match against Ohio State’s Dani Schoenly, securing the victory at 6-3, 6-1. This was Brahmbhatt’s second singles victory of the weekend, adding another Spartan victory under her belt.
Both Blackford and Kutlova put up strong performances against Northwestern’s Jennifer Riester and Katya Shepherd Johnson, respectively, but neither were able to secure their match.
The day continued with matches from senior Liisa Vehvilainen, juniors Issey Purser and Sarah Fazlagic and sophomore Natalie Stasny.
While Purser put up a hard-fight against her fellow Big Ten foe, Alessia Cau from Ohio State, she ultimately dropped the match 4-6, 4-6, finishing before all of her Green and White counterparts.
Fazlagic faced off against Butler’s Elle Martin, and took her match in just two sets, 7-5 (8-6), 6-4. This was Fazlagic’s first Spartan win of the season.
Sophomore Natalie Stasny fought back from losing her first set, 2-6, and forced a third set after winning her second in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-5). Stasny’s third set was a back-and-forth battle between her and her DePaul opponent, Sasha Sakura Stula. Stasny ultimately took the match at 6-3, and added another victory to her total this weekend.
Senior Liisa Vehvilainen was last to finish her match, coming back from being down 4-1 in the first set, taking it at 7-5. Vehvilainen continued her reign, finishing her match successfully, 6-2.
The Spartans return to action this weekend, Nov. 7-Nov. 9 for the NCAA Sectional Championship, with more information to be announced.
