Women's Tennis Set to Play Maryland in the Second Round of B1G Tournament


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 9-seeded Penn State women’s tennis team (12-13, 4-7 B1G) heads to West Lafayette, Ind. to face the No. 8 Maryland Terrapins (16-8, 5-6 B1G) in the second round of the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament on April 27 at 9 a.m. E.T.

SEASON IN REVIEW
 
The Nittany Lions ended their regular season with a 12-13 overall record and 4-7 Big Ten conference record to clinch the No-9 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. Penn State lost its first two conference matches but was able to defeat Minnesota 4-0. In the same weekend, the team lost a close match to No. 4-seeded Wisconsin, 2-4.
 
In its next six matches, the Blue and White were able to take two wins against Indiana and Nebraska. Most of the losses during this span were close, hard-fought matches. The Nittany Lions capped off their season with a 4-0 win versus Rutgers.
 
Junior Sofiya Chekhlystova is No. 68 in the nation. She posted a 15-6 overall singles record and 5-2 Big Ten record. Graduate student Ioana Gheorghita and junior Alina Lebedeva have achieved a 6-2 overall doubles record and a 5-2 Big Ten record since being paired together at No. 3 doubles. 
 
TALKING ABOUT THE TERRAPINS 
 
The Maryland women’s tennis team ended their regular season with a 16-8 overall record and a 5-6 Big Ten record. The Terrapins finished out their season with a 4-2 win against the Nittany Lions and a 4-0 Big Ten loss to No. 2-seeded Ohio State.
 
Last weekend, Penn State fell to Maryland in a close match. The Terrapins clinched the doubles point. Sofiya Chekhlystova and Karly Friedland tallied the two points for the Blue and White with their singles wins.
 
UP NEXT
 
The winner of the dual match will play the No. 1-seeded Michigan Wolverines on April 28 at 9 a.m. E.T.
