SAN DIEGO – Four members of the UCLA women’s tennis team will compete with the best players in their geographic area starting Thursday, when action begins at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on the campus of University of San Diego.
The Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center is set to host the Bruin quartet, made up of freshmen Ahmani Guichard and Mia Jovic, sophomore Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and junior Elise Wagle. Each is part of the singles field, with those matches scheduled to begin Thursday. Doubles play, starting Friday, includes the pairings of Guichard/Lutkemeyer and Jovic/Wagle.
Fourteen regional events are taking place throughout the month of October. In Divison I, regional doubles champions and finalists and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending ITA National Fall Championships, scheduled for Nov. 1-5 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Jovic makes her debut Friday at 9 a.m. PT against No. 17-32 seed Midori Castillo of Arizona. No. 17-32 Lutkemeyer meets Crystal Kim of UC Riverside at 10:30 a.m. Guichard, also in the 17-32 grouping after winning two of her three singles contests at the ITA All-American Championships, takes on Loyola Marymount’s Kim-Michaela Zahraj at 12 p.m. Wagle, a No. 9-16 seed, has a first-round bye before taking on Myah Petchey of San Diego State or Diana Yanotovskaya of Cal State Fullerton at 1:30 p.m.
On the doubles side, both pairs play at 9 a.m. Friday. Jovic and Wagle face off with the Long Beach State tandem of Doga Akyurek and Sarah Medik, while Guichard and Lutkemeyer have Fullerton’s Yanotovskaya and Seha Yu in Round 1.
Wagle and Kimmi Hance collected the ITA Southwest Regional doubles title in 2022, beating Pepperdine returners Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen in the final. Hance was the singles runner-up, falling to Broadus in the championship match.
