Women’s Tennis Opens 2024 Campaign Saturday at Home Versus SMU


DURHAM – The 15th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team is set to open the 2024 dual match slate on Saturday, Jan. 13 as the Blue Devils host SMU at 1 p.m., inside the newly renovated Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. 
 
The Blue Devils feature six straight matches to open the season at home in Durham, before hitting the road for the month of February. 
 
Match Information
All home Duke tennis matches are free admission.
 
General public parking will be available in the blue zone, with the easiest entrance being at the south end of the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. ADA parking is available in the Card Lot with an accessible entrance available on the north end of the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Guests with disabilities will be able to use the elevator indoors to go up to the seating level. The newly renovated addition to the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center will be accessible via a mulched path on the northwest side of the building. Guests will then be able to use the elevator to go to the seating level.
 
The Series with SMU 
The Blue Devils and the Mustangs will meet for the seventh time in school history and the first time since 2008. Duke is 3-3 all-time in the series and has won its last three matches. In matches played in Durham, the Blue Devils hold a 3-0 ledger. 
  
Scouting SMU 
SMU is coming off winning the American Athletic Conference Championship as the No. 1 seed. Head Coach Jeff Nevolo received the AAC Coach of the Year honors last season and enters his fifth season. 
SMU registered a 16-9 mark a year ago and will enter the ACC in 2024-25. 
  
Duke Versus the American Athletic Conference 
The Blue Devils possess a 19-8 record versus American Athletic Conference (AAC) opponents — East Carolina (5-0), Memphis (2-0), Charlotte (2-0), Rice (0-2), South Florida (4-3), SMU (3-3), Temple (1-0), Tulsa (1-0), Wichita State (1-0). Duke is currently on a 7-match win streak versus AAC foes. 
 
What is Next?
Duke will have a busy next week as the Blue Devils host a pair of opponents on Thursday, Jan. 18.  At 9 a.m., Duke welcomes NC Central and then hosts Charlotte at 5 p.m., in the afternoon.  The Blue Devils close the week by hosting Illinois at 6 p.m.
