Women’s Tennis Lillian Gabrielsen Advances To Singles Semifinals at ITA Southern Regionals

BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss women’s tennis Lillian Gabrielsen completed her third day of competition at the ITA Southern Regionals hosted at the LSU Tennis Complex, advancing to the semifinals in the singles bracket.
 
Of the 133-player field in Baton Rouge, Gabrielsen is the last remaining unranked competitor to reach the tournament semifinals in singles.
 
Gabrielsen, the lone Rebel standing to represent Ole Miss in competition, faced off against No. 7 seed Kaitlyn Carnicella of Auburn. During the first set Gabrielsen started out behind 0-2, but did not take long to adjust. She went on to win the next four games to claim a 6-2 dominating set to start her off.
 
The Auburn Eagle did not let up easy though, as she fought back against her Rebel competitor. It was a back-and-forth battle between the two for the first five games, but Carnicella was able to keep the momentum shifted in her direction in the last four games as she took the second set 6-4.
 
With Gabrielsen’s back against the wall, she began the third set against Carnicella, dropping the first game. Gabrielsen did not let up and she began her hot streak to go on to win the final set in the Rebel’s favor, 6-3, to progress her to the semifinals.
 
The Oslo, Norway native will now look to Monday where she will face off against No. 2 seed Petra Sedlackova of Alabama to earn a spot in the final matchup.

“It was an incredible performance by Lil. The girl she played was a great player. Lil went up on the set 4-2, and the girl never gave up and made Lil come up with the goods. After losing the second set, for Lil to bounce back and close it out in the third was just amazing. She’s been playing some great tennis. Yesterday was a great win for her and today was a great win. Looking forward to tomorrow to see if she can continue. I’m sure she’ll play another great player, and we’ll see if she can come out on top again.”
