SAN DIEGO – The UCLA women’s tennis team quickly picked up the first four points en route to a 4-3 victory against Rice Friday at The Santaluz Club.
Fangran Tian clinched the win for the Bruins (2-2) in straight sets, following similar efforts by Elise Wagle and Vanessa Ong. Each member of the trio triumphed without giving up more than two games in a set. Tian and Wagle also each contributed to a doubles win and the day’s initial point. The Owls (2-3) prevailed in each of the final three completed matches – all of which were decided by 10-point, third-set tiebreakers.
UCLA emphatically took the doubles point after jumping out to commanding leads on all three courts. Tian and Ava Catanzarite were first to finish, surrendering just one game to Sydney Berlin and Federica Trevisan on Court 2. Then, with Ong and Sasha Vagramov nearing a victory of their own on the Court 3, the ninth-ranked pair of Wagle and Kimmi Hance closed out Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi 6-2 to get their team on the scoreboard.
Ong ensured her match would count in singles play, racing out to a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Budin on Court 5. Making her first singles appearance of the dual-match portion of the schedule, Wagle followed her court neighbor’s example with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Darya Schwartzman on Court 6.
