LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – The Utah women’s tennis team advanced three to the ITA Mountain Regional Semifinals on Friday. The Utes moved a doubles team and one singles player to the semifinals of the main draws.
“The group came out and competed well today,” remarked head coach Ric Mortera. “I thought we got put in some great situations that we can build off of, and those experiences will help us later on. I am looking forward to this final weekend of the tournament, which will have some great matches and opportunities for us to continue to look to improve.”
The regional doubles champion and the regional singles champion and finalists qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships from November 4-7 in San Diego, California.
In main draw doubles, third-seeded Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova matched up with Sydney Fitch and Alexis Odom of Air Force in the Round of 16. The Ute’s duo continued its winning ways and earned an 8-3 victory, moving on to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, the winning ways continued as they defeated Ana Morett and Megan Davis of Weber State 8-3, moving into the semifinals.
The 8th-seeded doubles team of Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez squared off with Mila Stanoevic and Elys Ventura of Colorado. The Utes and Buffs were in a battle, and the match game down to a tiebreaker. Utah would come up short and fall 8-7 to Colorado.
In singles action of the main draw, the Utes had a quarterfinals matchup against each other. Third-seeded Goncharova matched up with 9th-seeded Barksdale. Barksdale came away with a 6-0, 6-1 victory and moved on to the semifinals.
In the consolation draw, Madison Tattini faced Megan Lombardi of Weber State. Tattini picked up her the singles win after earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory. In another consolation match, Marcela Lopez matched up with Colorado State’s Emily Dush. Lopez dropped set one, 6-2, but responded to win the second set, 6-0. Lopez earned the third set win 10-5 and won the match.
Saturday will see the semifinals for the singles and doubles main draw, with play starting at starting at 10 a.m. MT. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
