CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke men’s tennis team opened up the ITA Sectional Championship on Thursday afternoon in Chapel Hill. Cooper Williams was the lone Blue Devil participating in both doubles and singles and claimed two victories.
The No. 2 seed in the singles bracket, Williams opened with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Yale’s Krish Gupta. In the opening set, Williams led 2-1 and 3-2 before using a break to go ahead 5-2 and then finish the set. Gupta took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the second set, but Williams again broke and claimed a 3-2 advantage. He never trailed again in leading 4-3 and 5-4 before completing the straight-set victory.
In doubles, Williams and Theo Winegar earned a straight-set victory against Adit Sinha and Nathan Mao of Cornell, 6-3, 6-2. The Blue Devil duo advances to the quarterfinals of the main draw Friday and will face Virginia’s Mans Dahlberg and Dylan Dietrich.
The Blue Devils’ other doubles team of Gerard Planelles Ripoll and Pedro Rodenas faced the bracket’s No. 2 seed of Columbia’s Nicolas Kotzen and Max Westphal and fell 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3). The pair drops into the consolation bracket.
Duke continues play in Chapel Hill on Friday.
