ROME, Ga. – California women’s tennis senior Katja Wiersholm won twice on the first day of the ITA Conference Masters Championships on Thursday to reach Friday’s singles quarterfinals at the Rome Tennis Center.
The 33rd-ranked Golden Bear – who’s seeded third – defeated Nevada’s Amahee Charrier 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of 32. Wiersholm then beat Xavier’s Madeleine Rexroat 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16. She next plays UC San Diego’s Julia Haynes on Friday at 10:30 a.m. PT.
A quarterfinal win would qualify Wiersholm for the NCAA Singles Championship, as the four singles semifinalists from the ITA Conference Masters Championships advance to the postseason.
A full recap – including Cal’s results from the first day of the ITA West Sectional Championships in Los Angeles – will follow.
