CARY, N.C. – Cal women’s tennis sophomores Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm advanced to Friday’s consolation quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships with wins on Thursday at Cary Tennis Park.

The Bears won consolation rounds of 16 qualifying matches on Thursday and earned rounds of 16 byes to reach Friday’s quarterfinals.

The 50th-ranked Alsola was scheduled to face Texas A&M’s ninth-ranked Carson Branstine in the consolation singles draw on Thursday morning, but the Aggie withdrew with an injury, and the Golden Bear moved on. Alsola plays USC’s 65th-ranked Snow Han on Friday at 10 a.m. ET.

 

Thursday afternoon in Cary, Alsola and Wiersholm defeated North Carolina’s 36th-ranked Carson Tanguilig and Reilly Tran, 7-6(3), 6-3. The Bears next play Tennessee’s fifth-seeded and 10th-ranked Rebekah Mertena and Esther Adeshina on Friday at 2 p.m. ET.

 

The ITA All-American Championships end on Sunday.
