Wake Forest Concludes Play at ITA Carolina Regionals


CARY, N.C. – Behind a stellar doubles run from junior Filippo Moroni and senior Juan Lopez de Azcona, the Wake Forest men’s tennis team concluded play at the ITA Carolina Regionals Tuesday.
 
The Demon Deacons were led by Moroni and Lopez de Azcona as the dynamic duo recorded a 5-0 record in doubles play before falling to Rafael Iziquierdo Luque and Joseph Wayand of NC State in the finals.

Moroni and Lopez de Azcona’s run included a 7-5, 1-6 [10-7] victory over Karl Poling and Peter Murphy of North Carolina, as well as a 6-4, 4-6 [10-8] victory over Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli of NC State.

 

In singles action, senior Melios Efstathiou reached the quarterfinals before suffering a 6-3, 6-4 loss to eventual champion, Casey Hoole of South Carolina.

 

Other notable Demon Deacon performances included senior Matthew Thomson and junior Luciano Tacchi’s run to the round of 16 in doubles action, as well as freshman Bozo Barun, Thomson and Tacchi’s run to the round of 32 in singles action.

 

Of note, Barun, Thomson and Tacchi all posted a 2-1 mark in main draw singles play. As a team, the Deacs recorded a 10-9 record in singles main draw action and a 7-4 mark in doubles play for the tournament.

Wake Forest will resume fall 2022 play on Friday, Oct. 28 as the Demon Deacons host the Wake Forest Invitational.
