CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  Six members of the Virginia women’s tennis team will be competing in the ITA Atlantic Regional, being held Oct. 20-24 in Blacksburg, Va.

Grad student Julia Adams, senior Natasha Subhash, junior Sara Ziodato, sophomore Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky and freshman Meggie Navarro will be competing as individuals and doubles teams in the tournament.

Navarro begins play on Thursday in qualifying. The other five players will be in the main draw. Doubles action begins on Friday.

Virginia players have won the singles title four times, including twice by Subhash (2019 and 2021). Chervinsky was the runner-up in singles last year after falling to Subhash in the final. Subhash is the only Cavalier to twice earn the regional title.

UVA has twice won the doubles title, most recently in 2015. Collard and Hibah Shaikh were the runners-up in doubles last year.

The regional champions and finalists will earn invitations to compete at the 2022 ITA National Fall Championships, being held Nov. 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

Meggie Navarro won her opening match in the qualifying tournament, downing Riecke Gillar of Marshall 6-1, 7-5, but fell 6-2, 6-2 to Karly Friedland of Penn State in the qualifying final.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT AND SCHEDULE

Singles main draw matches will be three full sets. Doubles main draw matches will be 8-game pro sets until the semifinals. The semifinals and finals will be best of three sets with a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a full third set. Qualifying singles matches will have a match tiebreak in lieu of a full third set.
