CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team (3-0) takes on No. 11 Baylor (3-0) on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Boar’s Head Sports Club

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • The 2022 NCAA Champions remain No. 1 in the ITA rankings
  • Virginia opened the season with a pair of 7-0 victories on Sunday against UNCW and Richmond and added a 7-0 road win at Liberty on Thursday
  • Virginia has won 26-straight dual matches dating back to last season
  • The Cavaliers have four players in the ITA singles rankings: Chris Rodesch (27), Iñaki Montes (37), Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (45) and Bar Botzer (71)
  • Ryan Goetz and Chris Rodesch are ranked No. 17 in doubles
  • Goetz is on a five-match win streak in singles with a 7-2 mark on the season
  • Montes picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win on court two on Thursday at Liberty
  • Måns Dahlberg has started his collegiate career with back-to-back straight-set wins
  • Virginia leads the all-time series 11-3 against Baylor and has won five of the last six match-ups
  • Baylor won the last meeting between the two teams, 4-2, last February in Waco. Rodesch and von der Schulenburg picked up the points for UVA with straight-set wins on courts two and four 

NOTING BAYLOR

  • The Bears have three 7-0 wins, including topping William & Mary by that score on Friday in Williamsburg
  • Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi are ranked No. 3 in the doubles rankings and 23 and 115 in singles. They played on courts five and six last season when the Cavaliers faced the Bears
  • Baylor went 29-4 last season, winning the Big 12 Championship and advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals
  • Michael Woodson has been the head coach of the Bears since the 2020-21 season

ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers host ITA Kickoff Weekend matches on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 28-29 with Ole Miss, Princeton and Nevada coming to Charlottesville in pursuit of an invitation to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships
  • Virginia opens play by hosting Nevada at noon on Saturday. Ole Miss and Princeton play at 9 a.m.

The championship match takes place on Sunday, Jan. 29
