Virginia Men's Tennis | Iñaki Montes Named Academic All-American

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s tennis junior Iñaki Montes de la Torre has been named to the 2023 Academic All-America Men’s Tennis Team as selected by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA), the organization announced Wednesday (May 31). The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

Montes was one of 18 student-athletes to be awarded Academic All-America honors this season, being named to the five-player second team.

Montes, an economics major, helped lead the Cavaliers to win their second straight NCAA championship and third straight ACC Championship. He won the clinching point in Virginia’s victory over Ohio State in the NCAA final as well as clinching the doubles point against the Buckeyes. He is an ITA Doubles All-American and has been ranked in the top 10 in both singles and doubles this season. He was named the 2022-23 WINA Male Athlete of the Year for the Virginia athletics department at last month’s Hoos Choice Awards.

Montes is the third player in program history to be voted an Academic All-American, joining Carl Söderlund, who earned back-to-back honors in 2019-20, and Scott Lebovitz in 1997.

This is the first year that the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) have awarded All-Americans in tennis after the sport was previously part of the At-Large category for honors.
