CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.—Twelfth-ranked Virginia defeated No. 9 North Carolina, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the Boar’s Head Inn indoor courts.
The Cavaliers won a tightly-contested doubles point before sweeping singles matches at No. 4, No. 6 and No. 1.
UVA improved to 13-4 overall this season and 5-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina dropped its first ACC match of the year, falling to 11-5, 3-1.
Tar Heel graduate student Brian Cernoch was not able to play on Friday, missing his first career match in five years at Carolina. Freshman Will Jansen played doubles but not singles, but UNC did see the return of junior Logan Zapp to the lineup for the first time this spring.
In doubles, Chris Rodesch and William Woodall of UVA beat Karl Poling and Jansen at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, before Zapp and Benjamin Kittay beat Alexander Kiefer and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg, 6-3, at No. 3. The Cavs took the deciding doubles match at No. 1 over Ryan Seggerman and Casey Kania.
After taking the 1-0 lead with the doubles point, Virginia then swept singles matches at No. 4 over Kittay, No. 6 over Henry Lieberman and No. 1 over Seggerman to complete the 4-0 victory.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Virginia Tech.
