Viller Moeller Moves Into Quarterfinals At Fall Nationals

SAN DIEGO – California women’s tennis senior Hannah Viller Moeller won in straight sets Thursday to move into the main draw singles quarterfinals at the ITA National Fall Championships, while fellow Golden Bear Jessica Alsola advanced to the consolation singles round of 16 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
 
Viller Moeller defeated Virginia’s 85th-ranked Hibah Shaikh, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 16. The veteran Bear next plays Oklahoma State’s 40th-ranked Ange Oby Kajuru in the quarterfinals on Friday at 10 a.m. PT.
 
Alsola beat the 74th-ranked Charlotte Chavatipon of Texas, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5, on Thursday. With a bye in the consolation round of 16, the Cal junior next plays Alabama’s Petra Sedlackova in the quarterfinals Friday at 10 a.m.
 
The Bears had a more challenging time in doubles Thursday. The duo of Viller Moeller and Mao Mushika fell to USC’s Grace Piper and Parker Fry, 7-5, 6-1, in the main draw round of 16. In consolation doubles round of 16 qualifying, the ninth-ranked Alsola and Katja Wiersholm lost to North Carolina’s 53rd-ranked Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran, 6-1, 6-2.
 
Fall nationals conclude on Sunday.
