ATHENS, Ga. — The No. 7-seeded Vanderbilt women’s tennis team succumbed to the Aggies in a 4-0 loss on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Commodore duo Célia-Belle Mohr and Holly Staff were relentless in doubles, claiming a 6-2 win over the Aggies’ No. 3 Mary Stoiana and Mia Kupres, and Vanderbilt was a win short of the doubles point. A&M responded on Courts 2 and 3, when Bridget Stammel and Valeria Ray fell to Nicole Khirin and Carson Branstine. Anessa Lee and Amy Stevens were bested by Lucciana Perez and Jeanette Mireles, and the Aggies claimed the doubles point.
The Aggies kept the momentum in singles and didn’t look back, taking back-to-back wins. No. 1 Stoiana defeated Stammel in two sets, 6-1, 6-3, and shortly after, Ray fell to No. 19 Khirin on Court 3; the Aggies were up 3-0. It was a battle in the second set, and the Commodores held on on Courts 4, 5, and 6, but A&M ultimately clinched the match when Perez defeated Staff 6-3, 6-3.
