Utes head to Arizona and Arizona State


The University of Utah women’s tennis team is headed to Arizona to take on the Arizona Wildcats Friday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. and the Arizona State Sun Devils the Saturday April 15 at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

Utah is coming off a win against Washington State, where they defeated the Cougars 6-1. The Utes started off on the right foot with doubles, winning on court two and three. Utah went on to win on every court, except court one, in singles with Madison Tattini clinching the win. 

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS

Head coach Ric Mortera has been able to keep the Utes ranked for the second consecutive year. In the most recent ITA poll, Utah women’s tennis cracked the top 50, coming in at 48th.

HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA

Ric Mortera is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2022-23. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 44-38 overall record. During the 2021-22 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. The team started a program best 9-0, which included wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Pac-12 opponent Washington State. He helped the Utes sign a top ten recruiting class nationally (No. 9)  in 2022 and was named the ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year.

SCOUTING ARIZONA

Arizona is 14-11 this season and is currently 51st in the nation.They currently have no ranked singles players or doubles teams. The Wildcats have been able to defeat one Pac-12 opponent since beginning conference play. 

SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE

Arizona State has won fourteen of their nineteen matches and are currently ranked 23rd. The Sun Devils have one ranked player and doubles teams. Chelsea Fontenel is 23rd in singles, and Domenika Turkovic and Patricija Spaka make up the 20th ranked doubles team.
