Utah travels to San Diego for a two road matches


SALT LAKE CITY –  The University of Utah women’s tennis team is scheduled for two matches in the upcoming weekend, traveling to San Diego to face UC San Diego on Friday Mar. 1, followed by a match against San Diego State on Sunday Mar. 3.

FIRST SERVE

Utah is slated for a pair of matches this weekend in San Diego Calif. The Utes are set for a 1 p.m. match against the Tritons on Friday Mar. 1, before taking on the Aztecs on Sunday Mar. 3.


LAST TIME OUT

In their last outing, the Utes claimed a 5-2 victory over the Memphis Tigers on the road. Starting off strong in doubles, Ana Luiza Cruz and Marcela Lopez grabbed a 6-4 victory on the first court while Samantha Horwood and Kat Lyman claimed a 7-5 win on the No. 2 court.


After securing the doubles point, Sara Akid set the wheels in motion with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court No. 5. Next, Yuhan Liu claimed victory in the third spot, topping her opponent 7-5, 6-4. With Lyman winning 7-5, 6-2 on the fourth court to clinch the match victory, Ana Luiza Cruz drove it home with a 7-6 (5), 6-0 win on the No. 6 court.



IN THE RANKS

The Utes are currently ranked No. 41 in the country, after taking down No. 38 Memphis for their third straight victory last weekend. Utah’s Marcela Lopez is ranked No. 83 in the country after posting a 5-3 record so far on the season. In the fall she claimed a runner-up title at the ITA Regionals and made an ITA Championship appearance where she picked up two wins in consolation play. 


HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA

Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 52-44 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera’s leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings.
