Utah sweeps UCSD to claim fourth straight victory

SAN DIEGO – The University of Utah women’s tennis program faced the UCSD on Friday afternoon, securing their fourth straight victory with a clean sweep over the Tritons. 

“Good to get the win today,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “I was happy how we were able to make some adjustments that were needed in order to come out with the win. We will enjoy this, then get back to work tomorrow in preparation for San Diego State.”

The Utes had a strong start in doubles competition, as Marcela Lopez and Ana Luiza Cruz set the wheels in motion by claiming a 6-2 victory over Polina Jorniak and Ella Pachl on court No. 1. In the third spot, Utah duo Kaila Barksdale and Sara Akid clinched the doubles point by defeating Sophie Pearson and Naomi Nguyen 7-6 (3). The remaining match was left unfinished while Samantha Horwood and Kat Lyman held a 6-5 lead. 

Utah continued momentum in singles, with Kat Lyman grabbing a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Nguyen in the No. 4 spot. Akid then followed suit on the sixth court, topping Cincy Chen 6-2, 6-2, while Lopez clinched the match-winning point with a 6-1, 7-5 victory on the No. 1 court. Next to finish was the second court, where Barksdale defeated Kelly Leung 7-5, 6-0. In the No. 5 spot, Emma Kamper collected a 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Jorniak, before Yuhan Liu closed out the sweep on the third court, topping Pearson 5-7, 6-3, 10-4, advancing the Utes to 8-3 overall.

Utah will start Pac-12 action by hosting Oregon for a home match at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center on Sunday Mar. 10.
