Utah starts Pac-12 Play with 4-2 Win over Oregon

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women’s tennis team started Pac-12 action Sunday afternoon and advanced its win streak to five as the Utes downed Oregon 4-2. 

“Loved the fight today,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “This is one of those matches where there is plenty to celebrate and also plenty to learn. Our seniors, Kat [Lyman] and Ana [Luiza Cruz] did a fantastic job down the stretch and Marcela [Lopez] played exceptional late in her third. Good day overall for us, looking forward to getting some rest and preparing for the northwest this week.”

Utah got the early jump on Oregon by capturing the doubles point. On the No. 1 court, Ute duo Marcela Lopez and Ana Luiza Cruz defeated Uxia Martinez and TildeJagare with a 6-2 score. The Utes captured the doubles point advantage at the No. 3 spot where Sara Akid and Kaila Barksdale picked up a 6-4 win over Karin Young and Candela Aparisi. 

At the No. 2 spot, Samantha Horwood and Kat Lyman were down but battling in a close 5-4 set  before it went unfinished. 

The Ducks were able to even the score in singles by picking up a win on the No. 2 court. Oregon took an edge picking up a win with the next court to finish in the No. 5 spot. 

Marcela Lopez put the Utes back in it with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Sophie Luescher in the No. 1 spot. 

The match was tied 2-2 when Cruz finished with a win on No. 6 to put the Utes ahead 3-2. Cruz took her first set into a tiebreak winning 7-6 (7-5) and then…
