Utah Picks Up 4-1 Win Over Memphis

The University of Utah Women’s tennis team was able to clinch their neutral match against the Memphis Tigers today, Feb 25 with a 4-1 win.  

“Huge character test for the team today,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “I couldn’t be more proud of their response after yesterday. This has to continue to be our standard moving forward. We are excited for the opportunity to keep improving this week and getting things started with conference play.”

Utah began the day with a rocky start in doubles. Marcela Lopez and Kaila Barksdale were able to keep up their undefeated streak against Memphis players, Dolavee Tumthong and

Miriam Grosmann with a 6-2 win.  Both first doubles, Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini, and second doubles, Samantha Horwood and Katya Townsend, were defeated, 6-4, giving the Tigers the doubles point and an early lead. 

Utah excelled in singles play as Townsend was able to tie up the score with her win over Aran Teixido Garcia, 7-5,6-4. Lopez was able to defeat Tiger Emily Meyer, winning both sets 6-3. With a matching score, Goncharova beat out Micah Pierce for Utah’s third point. Closing out the match, Tattini was able to claim victory for the Utes after winning in the third set, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. All other matches were left unfinished.

Utah Women’s tennis is coming back to the George S. Eccles Tennis Center for their last two home matches of the season against the California Golden Bears on Friday, March 3 and the Stanford Cardinals on Sunday, March 5.
