Utah Fought in 4-2 Loss to Arizona

SALT LAKE CITY  – The Utah women’s tennis team competed in one of their final two matches of the season and fell 4-2 to Arizona. 


Arizona ended up claiming the doubles point by picking up wins on the No. 3 court and the No. 2 court. Ana Luiza Cruze and Marcela Lopez were tied 5-5 in their set before it went unfinished.

In singles, Arizona got an early jump picking up a win at No.5. The rest of the courts battled but the Wildcats were able to secure its next point on court No. 1. Arizona had a 3-0 lead before Utah got on the board. 

Utah’s first point came on court No. 4 where Kat Lyman defeated Midori Castillo-Meza 6-2, 7-5.  The next court to finish also went in the Utes’ favor as Kaila Barksdale defeated Martyna Ostrzygalo 7-5, 6-2 on the No. 3 court. 

Utah needed to pick up wins on the final courts to finish. Yuhan Liu battled with Kayla Wilkins on the No. 2 court. Liu dropped her first set 6-2 but came into the second set with some momentum. She forced the second set into a tie break. The tie breaker went into extra points but Liu couldn’t finish and fell 10-8. Arizona’s Wilkins took the 6-2, 7-6 win in the No. 2 spot and gave the Wildcats the 4-2 match win. 

Utah now sits at 10-10 overall on the season and have a 2-7 record in the Pac-12. 

UP NEXT

Utah will take on Colorado in the final match of the season on April 20 before heading to the Pac-12 Championship tournament. Utah will also honor seniors Ana Luiza Cruze and Kat Lyman
