LOS ANGELES – USC women’s tennis has a trio of Trojans heading into NCAA Individual competition, with two Trojans locked in for singles play and one USC duo in that draw. Sophomore Emma Charney and junior Grace Piper have secured their spots in the 64-player NCAA Singles draw, while Charney and Eryn Cayetano will make their NCAA doubles debut.
No. 30 Charney carries a 29-13 overall singles record this season, going 17-1 in dual action. In Pac-12 singles action, the sophomore went 9-3. Throughout the year, Charney has beaten ten ranked opponents and delivered six clinchers. The sophomore leads USC in singles wins and played primarily at No. 2 during dual action.
No. 62 Piper, will also make her first appearance at the NCAA Singles Championship. The junior reached a career best singles ranking of 43rd in February. This season, the Somerset, England native has tallied an overall singles record of 24-9 while playing primarily at the No. 3 & 4 position for the Trojans.
USC’s top doubles duo – No. 23 Cayetano and Charney – carry a 14-11 overall record in NCAA play. The duo will make their NCAA doubles debut this season. Cayetano has previously made multiple NCAA singles and doubles appearances, reaching the doubles semifinal last season alongside Maddy Sieg to earn All-American honors.
Following the NCAA Team Championship event, Individual competition is set to run May 20-25 at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
ABOUT NCAA SINGLES AND DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 17-19.
All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players.
