No. 6 seed USC women’s tennis defeated No. 11 seed Washington State in the first round of the Pac-12 tennis tournament Wednesday afternoon in Ojai.
The Trojans stumbled out of the gate early, as No. 44 Naomi Cheong and Snow Han were defeated 6-3 on doubles court two by Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom. Emma Charney and Nathalie Rodilosso claimed a point on court three with a 6-4 victory over Hania Abouelsaad and Yang Lee, but Washington State secured the doubles point with a victory on court three as No. 55 Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse defeated Maddy Sieg and Grace Piper 7-6 (4).
The Trojans bounced back in singles play, however, scoring on four straight courts. Piper led the charge, defeating Abouelsaad 6-1, 6-2 on court five to even the score at one point each. Cheong followed with a court four victory, taking down Kumhom 6-2, 6-1 to give the Trojans the lead. In rapid succession, Rodilosso and Sieg finished off their opponents to secure the match. Rodilosso went first, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lee on court six, before Sieg clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alvarez on court one.
When play stopped, the Trojans led on both unfinished courts: Han led 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 on court two, while Charney was leading 6-2, 5-4 on court three.
With their victory, the Trojans advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinals to face No. 3 seed Arizona State. The match will start at 6:00 p.m.
