USC Women’s Tennis Begins NCAA Action In Malibu

USC women’s tennis is set to open up its 2023 NCAA campaign from Southern California, traveling just up the 101 to Malibu to take on UNLV in the first round of action on Friday, May 5 at 10 a.m. Host No. 7 Pepperdine will face GCU on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. Winning teams will square off in the NCAA Second Round at 1 p.m. on Saturday (May 6) to fight for a ticket to the NCAA Super Regional at sites to be determined.
 
The eight teams that advance out of that round will head to the USTA National  for the remaining rounds of NCAA competition taking place May 18-20. So, too, will NCAA Individual Championships be held at Complex, with singles and doubles competition running May 22-27.

Pepperdine University | Malibu, Calif.

Friday (May 5)

10 a.m. — USC (19-9) vs. UNLV (19-3) 

1 p.m. — [9] #7 Pepperdine (18-3) vs. Grand Canyon (15-9) 

Saturday (May 6)

1 p.m.  — Friday winning teams     

 

ITA RANKINGS UPDATE

In the ITA’s latest rankings, USC was No. 26 in the team category and boasts two ranked singles players. 

 

Freshman Maddy Sieg led the way at No. 8, followed by senior Eryn Cayetano at No. 44. The Women of Troy also boast two ranked duos in No. 17 Cayetano/Sieg and No. 39 Snow Han/Naomi Cheong

 

REGULAR SEASON RECAP

USC wrapped up the regular season 16-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Freshman Maddy Sieg  led the Trojans in singles play this season, appearing at center court in all matches. Sieg only lost once this spring, boasting a 15-1 dual match singles record. 

Pac-12 RECAP

No. 6 seed USC women’s tennis went on a historic run at the 2023 Pac-12 Championship tournament, reaching the final for the first time in school history. The Women of Troy beat Washington State, No. 22 Arizona State and Cal before eventually falling to No. 1 seed/eighth ranked Cal in the championship final. 

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES

The Women of Troy hold a 75-37 all-time record in the tournament. USC has won six national championships in all, including NCAA titles in 1983 and 1985 after the NCAA began its women’s tennis…
