The Ducks’ four-match winning streak was snapped via a tough 4-3 decision to defending Mountain West Conference champion Fresno State last Saturday. After Sunday’s match, UO will open its conference slate Friday March 3 at Arizona.
Oregon junior Ares Teixido Garcia was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Tuesday after pushing her singles winning streak to five in a row while she has won seven straight doubles matches, paired with freshman Jo-Yee Chan. Teixido Garcia became the seventh Duck to earn the weekly conference honor and first since Janice Tjen in the 2021 season.
In addition to the success of Teixido Garcia and Chan, the Ducks’ top doubles tandem of Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral has won four consecutive matches and are 5-2 in the dual season. UO has earned the double point in six of nine matches this spring.
On the singles side, Martinez Moral has matched Teixido Garcia’s winning streak with five straight wins. Teixido Garcia has played primarily at the No. 2 spot in the lineup while Martinez Moral is 4-0 at the fourth position.
UC Santa Barbara is led by Amelia Honer, who is ranked No. 65 in the ITA’s latest singles rankings. Honer is also part of the nation’s No. 13 doubles team, paired with Kira Reuter. Senior Shakhnoza Khatamova qualified for the singles bracket in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
The Gauchos have already face four top-25 opponents and enter Sunday’s contest having dropped seven straight matches. UCSB advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Oregon is 4-0 all-time against UCSB, winning 5-2 in the last meeting during the 2017 season.
