UCLA at 2022 Wimbledon: Day 8

MONDAY, JULY 4

UCLA’s representatives at the All England Club had their stays ended Monday, as the final two Bruins in contention, Jean-Julien Rojer and Ena Shibahara, were eliminated.

Shibahara and partner Asia Muhammad, seeded fifth, reached the women’s doubles third round before bowing out against the 11th-seeded pair of Alicja Rosolska and Erin Routliffe. Shibahara and Muhammad were able to nab just one break of serve, which extended the match with a second-set tiebreaker. Rosolska and Routliffe prevailed, however, 6-4, 7-6(3), moving on to the quarterfinals.

Shibahara also had a chance to pick up her second Grand Slam mixed doubles title in as many events. Alongside another former UCLA standout in Rojer, Shibahara was unable to match her French Open success. Matthew Ebden and Samantha Stosur downed the tournament’s No. 1 seed in a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 thriller. Rojer and Shibahara were broken at 4-5 in the third set, closing out the match.
