Two Singles Wins To Close Out Furman Classic

Two Singles Wins To Close Out Furman Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mississippi State women’s tennis picked up a pair of singles wins on the final day of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic on Sunday.

“We gained a bunch of valuable experience this weekend,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. “We have some freshman and transfers so it was the first time the coaches have seen several players compete. Every win we picked up was a solid hard-earned win. We really didn’t have any bad losses and several of our losses were near miss upsets.”

Maddie Bemisderfer notched her first singles win of the fall by dominating her match against Ohio State’s Kathleen Jones 7-5, 6-3.

Emily Surcey earned her second win of the weekend by taking down Lindsay Zink of North Carolina 6-2, 6-2.

After going undefeated in singles play on the first two days, Maria Rizzolo fell in the Flight 2 finals against No. 15 Abbey Forbes of North Carolina 6-1, 6-1.

MSU posted six wins in singles matches during the three-day tournament and had three wins in doubles action.

The Bulldogs hit the courts again for individual play on Oct. 1 for the ITA All-American in Cary, North Carolina.

“Overall, I thought we competed well,” Greenan said. “We got upset wins in singles from Maria [Rizzolo] on the first two days while Emily [Surcey] and Maddie [Bemisderfer] provided the highlight singles wins today. We played a decent level in doubles with Alexandra Mikhailuk/Maria Rizzolo and Dharani Niroshan/Emily Surcey each playing some stellar doubles and picking up big wins. It was a good start to our fall season and we look forward to getting ready for ITA All-American and Regionals.”
