CARY, N.C. – A trio of Duke women’s tennis standouts – Katie Codd, Shavit Kimchi and Ellie Coleman – collected singles victories Wednesday during the first day of main draw action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championship at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary.
Coleman, a 53rd-ranked product of Midland, Mich., moved to 4-0 on the season with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over 20th-ranked Mia Kupres of Texas A&M. It marked Coleman’s second career top 20 win. She will next face 69th-ranked Valerie Glozman of Stanford Thursday at 10 a.m.
Also advancing to the round of 32 was 49th-ranked Codd with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over 118th-ranked Chloe Noel of Oklahoma. The ranked win was Codd’s fourth of her collegiate career. Codd will next go up against Tatum Evans of North Carolina at 1 p.m. Kimchi moved on as well with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win against UCLA’s Kate Fakih. Up next for Kimchi will be 81st-ranked Catherine Aulia of Tennessee at 10 a.m.
Duke’s Emma Jackson dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to 34th-ranked Bridget Stammel, while Blue Devil sophomore Eleana Yu fell, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Both of Duke’s doubles teams moved on to the round of 16 on Wednesday. The tandem of Yu and Jackson continued their impressive play together by knocking off eighth-ranked Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec of Colorado, 6-4, 6-1. Coleman and Kimchi also registered a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win against 53rd-ranked Maya Dutta and Zdena Safarova of Boise State.
